Our Legacy
Once a thriving, family-run destination, the venue became a cornerstone of Johannesburg's lifestyle scene-until it was tragically lost to arson in 2014.
Today, it rises again, more versatile and vibrant than ever. Rebuilt with purpose, this is not just a comeback-it's a reinvention.

Where we began
La Rustica began in 1996 inside an original house on Houghton Drive, rooted in the early fabric of Johannesburg’s northern suburbs.
It was here that Tanya and Marc built something from the ground up. What began as a 35-seater restaurant demanded everything. It was entirely driven by Tanya, shaped by her Italian roots and her upbringing between Italy and South Africa. Her attention to detail, her love for food, and her instinctive care for people became the foundation of the space.
Over time, the house expanded and the restaurant grew into a 300-seater. It became woven into people’s lives. The Sunday buffets became a ritual. The team became family. The space became something people belonged to.

When everything changed
In 2008, a violent home invasion changed everything. Marc, Tanya, and their children made the difficult decision to leave South Africa and everything behind.
Not long after, in 2010, the house that had held the restaurant for so many years was destroyed in an arson attack.
The restaurant ended.
But the memory and the love for La Rustica did not.

Why the story continued
Fourteen years later, during COVID, Marc and Tanya were in South Africa during lockdown. With time, stillness, and an instinct to keep moving, they stood in the space again. What they saw was not an ending. The ground felt too full of memory for that. In their minds, the story simply could not stop there.
What followed was not a reopening, but a reimagining. A decision to give the space a different life, shaped by everything they had learned, endured, and carried forward.

How it was rebuilt
Over the past three years, Marc and Tanya have been rebuilding La Rustica as a passion project, leading every part of it themselves. Hands-on and present throughout. Designing, building, pulling things apart, and rebuilding again. Working daily alongside a small team, shaping the space as it took form.
The building has been constructed almost entirely from recycled and reclaimed materials, each piece found, collected, and given a second life. With their approach, nothing is ever finished. Everything can be built on.
The aim was never perfection, but timelessness. To create a place that feels grounded and honest, as though it has always belonged exactly as it is.

What it is today
What stands today is not a replica of the past.
La Rustica has expanded into a multi-transferable venue, distinctive in its Italian architecture, with reimagined spaces throughout. Every corner has been thoughtfully brought back to life. This is a place where celebrations unfold naturally, where people gather, create, and connect.
